Friday, April 6, 2012 a Navy F/A 18 Hornet Fighter Jet
slammed into an apartment complex in Virginia Beach, VA
Shortly after noon on Friday, April 6, 2012 a Navy F/A 18 Hornet Fighter Jet slammed into an apartment complex in Virginia Beach, VA shortly after takeoff from the Naval Air Station Oceana. The scant information available to Azrael Franz at this time points to potential mechanical problems encountered on the jet as witnesses state that the plane was nose up/tail down flying low and dumping fuel. Fuel dumping is often a sign that pilots recognize the potential for a crash and are attempting to discharge as much fuel as possible before impact. Both pilots ejected from their crippled aircraft as regrettably it crashed into the mostly senior citizen occupied Mayfair Mews apartment complex. Thus far the only injuries reported are the pilot and a victim on the ground who suffered from smoke inhalation. Searches on the ground continue to assess the damage and determine how many more victims on the ground
there may be.
Azrael Franz will continue to monitor the situation and be available to the media for opinions about the cause of this unfortunate crash and the impact it will have on those directly affected as well as the entire Virginia Beach community.
The Navy F/A 18 Hornet is a versatile and reliable supersonic fighter jet that delivers a considerable payload. It is the aircraft used by the precision flying Navy Blue Angels and reaches speeds of Mach 1.8.
